12 Connecting Local Area Networks

2.Connect the other end of the cable to your router or switch.

It takes a few minutes for your router to assign an IP address to your computer. When your computer is con- nected, the following message appears over the LAN icon in the System Tray.

3.Double-click the LAN icon to view details for your con- nection.

Connecting a Wireless LAN (WLAN)

Use your computer’s built-in wireless LAN module to access your home or office network. The wireless LAN module is powered by the Intel® PROSet/Wireless utility.

Wireless systems work in infrastructure mode or peer-to- peer mode. In infrastructure mode, wireless devices com- municate to a wired LAN via access points. In ad-hoc mode (also known as peer-to-peer mode), wireless devices com- municate with each other directly and do not use an access point.

To connect to a wireless network:

1.Press Fn + F8 to enable the wireless LAN module.

2.The Intel(R) PROSet wireless module automatically scans for available networks.

3.Follow the on-screen prompts to access a network. Click Help in the Intel® PROSet/Wireless utility for assistance.

4.Click the utility icon in the system tray at any time to open the Intel PROSet Utility.
