7.2 Typical Tasks
TheDP570isusedinthemonitorchaintoemulatetheconsumerʹslisteningenvironment.

7.2.1 Measuring Dialogue Level

Asthemixisnearingcompletion,usethedialoguelevelindicatorsduringarepresentative
periodofspeechtodetermineandselecttheDialogueLevelSetvaluefortheprogram.The
measuredvaluefromprogrammaterialappearsinyellownumbers(–26inFigure72).The
dialoguelevelvaluesetinthesoftwareappearsingreennumbers(–27inFigure 72).

Ifitisnecessarytochangethevalueinthesoftware,presstheAcceptbutton.Thesystem
willsettheparameterautomatically.
Inmostcases,selectingandmeasuringarepresentativeperiodofspeechwithinthe
programwillserveasagoodexampleoftheoveralldialoguelevelthroughoutthe
program,providedgoodmixingpracticesareobserved.Insomecases,(documentaries,
locationsound,andsoon),itmaybedifficulttomatchthedialoguelevelfromsectionto
section.Inthesecases,whilethedialoguelevelindicatorsontheDP570canhelp,yourears
arethebesttooltoachievethebestbalance.
Inmostcases,shorttermmeasurementsarebestformonitoringduringeditingasthey
provideameasurementovereach10secondperiodofprogramaudioanddonotaverage
themeasurementoveralongperiodoftime.Foralongersectionofprogramthatwillbe
playedbackonce,aninfinitemeasurementcanbeusedasitwillintegratethemeasured
valueofthesignaluntilthemeterismanuallyreset,and,overthesinglepass,willreturn
theaverageleveloftheprogram(presumablyspeechcontent)forthatsection.Formore
informationonthemeasurementmodes,seeSection4.7.2.
For5.1programming,measuretheCenterchannel,asmostoftheimportantspeechcontent
occursinthischannel.Forstereoprograms,measureboththeLeftandRightchannels.

7.2.2 Monitoring the Dialogue Level

Asyouwork,checkthedialoguelevelindicator—theyellownumbersshownin
Figure 72—frequently.
Onceadialoguelevelvaluehasbeenselected,eithershorttermorinfinitemeasurements
canbeuseddependingonyourpreference.SeeSection4.7.2formoreinformationonthese
modesandtounderstandthedifferencesbetweenthem.
