The dot-matrix impact printhead forms a character by printing dots in a rectangular arrangement of dot cells called a dot matrix.

The following figure shows some examples of dot-matrix characters. Each character is printed in a 7-dot by 9-dot matrix. Three columns of blank dots at the right side of each character, the intercharacter space, provide the proper horizontal spacing between characters.
