Avoiding power source problems

Surge suppressors, line conditioners, and uninterruptible power supplies can help protect the server against power source problems.

Surge suppressors

During a power surge, the voltage level of electricity coming into the server can increase far above normal levels and cause data loss or system damage.

Protect your server and peripherals by connecting them to a surge suppressor, which will absorb voltage surges and prevent them from reaching your server.

When purchasing a surge suppressor:

Make sure the surge suppressor meets the appropriate product safety certification for your location, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or Conformite European (CE).

Check the maximum amount of voltage the suppressor allows to pass through the line. The lower the voltage that the suppressor allows to pass through, the better the protection for the server.

Check the energy absorption (dissipation) rating. The higher the energy absorption rating, the better the protection for the server.

Check line-conditioner capabilities. A line conditioner smooths out some normal line noise (small voltage fluctuations) of an electrical supply.
