HiSpeed Switch Troubleshooting Guide

Problem: After rebooting my PC, I cannot log onto my Novell or DHCP server.

Solution: PCs equipped with faster processors will boot up before STA on the switch has completely stabilized. Because the ports on the switch have not gone to ‘Forwarding’, applications on the PCs may have timed out when trying to connect to the server.

To disable Spanning Tree on the switch, type

/VBRIDGE/CONFIG/bridge <vlan#>, select option 1

Note: Not recommended if there are redundant bridge paths resulting in loops on your network.

To reduce the STA timer, type

/VBRIDGE/CONFIG/bridge <vlan#>, select option 5

Note: Ensure that STA timers are set to be the same on all bridges. If BPDUs are transmitted at different time intervals, this may result in an unstable network (state of flux).

Problem: The switch is constantly flooding the network with broadcast traffic. How can I control the amount of broadcast on my network?

Solution: By design, a bridge will forward all broadcast traffic. However, if the switch is specifically broadcasting ‘Unknown Unicast’ packets, verify that DLF is enabled. The Destination Lookup Failure (DLF) mechanism slows down broadcasts sent from the CPU which may eventually consume total bandwidth on the network. By default, DLF is enabled. To enable/disable DLF on the switch, type

/VBRIDGE/CONFIG >throttle

If you have redundant bridge paths on your network, verify that STA is enabled and ports are in a forwarding/blocking state

/VBRIDGE/SHOW > bridge <vlan#> /VBRIDGE/SHOW > port <vlan#>
