SECTION 8—WHEELS

WARNING

After adjustments and before use make sure all attaching hardware is securely tightened.

Installing/Replacing Six or Eight-inch Caster/Fork

NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGURE 8.1.

Installing Caster/Fork

1.Remove the casters from the accessory carton.

2.Unscrew the locknut from the stem of the wheel/fork assembly.

3.Push the stem up through the caster head tube.

4.Install large plastic washer and secure with locknut.

5.To properly tighten caster journal system and guard against flutter, perform the following check:

A.Tip back of wheelchair to floor.

B.Pivot both forks and casters to top of their arc simultaneously.

C.Let casters drop to bottom of arc (wheels should swing once to one-side, then immediately rest in a straight downward position).

D.Adjust locknuts according to freedom of caster swing.

E.Snap black dust covers over the locknut and stem.

6.Test wheelchair for maneuverability.

7.Readjust locknuts if necessary and repeat STEPS 5 and 6 until correct.

Replacing Caster/Fork

1.Remove the black dust cover.

2.Remove locknut and plastic washer.

3.Drop the front caster/fork assembly out of the caster head tube.

4.Slide in the new six or eight-inch caster/fork assembly.

5.Reassemble by reversing STEPS 1-3.

6.Tighten caster journal system to guard against caster flutter. Refer to Replacing Caster/Fork on page 57.
