10 Battery Installation
6.0 BATTERY INSTALLATION

6.1 Battery SafetyPrecautions

Servicing of batteriesshould be performed or supervised by personnel knowledgeable of batteries
and the required precautions.Keep unauthorized personnel away from batteries.
When replacing batteries, use the same nu mber and type of batteries.
CAUTION
Lead-acid batteries contai nh azardous materials. Batteries must
be handled, transpor ted, and recycled or discard ed in accordance
with federal, state, and local regulat ions. Because lead is a toxic
substance, lead-acid batteriesshould be recycled rather than
discarded.
Do not open or mutilate the batteryor batteries. Released
electrolyte is harmfulto the skin and eyes. It may be toxic. Do not
dispose of battery or batteries in a fire. Thebattery may explode.
A battery can presenta risk of electrical shockand high short
circuit current. The following precau tions should be observed
when working on batteries:
1. Remove watches, rings, or othe rme tal objects.
2. Use tools with insulatedhandles.
3. Wear rubber gloves and boots.
4. Do notlay tools or metal parts ontop of batteries.
5. Disconnect charging source prior to connecting or
disconnecting battery t erminals.
6. Determine if batteryis inadvertently grounded. If
inadvertently grounded ,r emove source of ground. Contact
with any partof a grounded battery can result in electrical
shock. The likelihood o f such shock will be reduced if such
grounds are removed durin gi nstallation and maintenance.
Lead-acid batteries can present a riskof fire because they
generatehydrogen gas. The followingprocedures should be
followed:
1. DO NOT SMOKE when near batteries.
2. DO NOT cause flame or spa rk in battery area.
3. Discharge static elec tricity from body before touching
batteries by firstto uchinga grounded metal surface.
