Glossary

802.11b

WLAN standard. Provides a transmission speed

 

of 11 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band.

802.11g

WLAN standard. Provides transmission speeds

 

of up to 54 Mbps (typically 22 Mbps) in the

 

2.4 GHz band. Is considered a successor of, and

 

is compatible with, 802.11b. Enables high

 

speed data access from up to 100 meters

 

distance from the base station.

DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

 

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is used

 

to configure IP addresses and applicable

 

information dynamically. Instead of a static (fixed)

 

IP address, DHCP clients receive their IP address

 

from a central DHCP server.

DMZ

DeMilitarized Zone (DMZ) is a decoupled isolated

 

partial network that is switched between the

 

network to be protected and the unsecured

 

network.

DNS

Domain Name System (DNS) Internet service that

 

is used to assign IP addresses to the corresponding

 

readable domain names and vice

Firewall

Technology in the form of hardware and/or

 

software that controls the flow of data between

 

a private and an unprotected network (which is

 

LAN and Internet) or protects an internal

 

network from attacks from the Internet.

Firmware

Preinstalled software to operate your Ovation.

FTP

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) regulates file transfers

 

on the Internet.
