Appendix D: VSAT BUC Protocol Support

VSAT BUC protocol support

In order to provide seamless integration with the legacy SierraCom VSAT BUC product line, compatible serial protocol was introduced to the CO SSPA protocol selection. This protocol is supported in I/O board firmware version 3.50 or better. In order to enable SierraCom protocol, connect to a SSPA unit over Standard String Protocol. Select the relevant option from System Settings Table 10-6 (data address 16). Cycle SSPA power. After power-up, unit will come up with new protocol selection.

Protocol Description

This manual provides only a short description of the VSAT BUC serial protocol, and covers common compatibility issues. For a full protocol description, refer to Paradise Datacom LLC document number 201410.

Serial Data Format

The serial data format is listed below. The SSPA should respond to any command within 50 msec. If there is no response in that time, the host computer should repeat the command.

Baud Rate

9600 bps

Data Bits

8

Parity

none

Stop Bits

1

Message Rate

1 every 40 msec

BUC Response Time

12 msec, typical

Maximum Response Time

40 msec

Power Up State

Original VSAT BUCs utilized one of two power-up modes: RF ON and RF OFF. The CO SSPA works differently – it powers up using the last saved state. In order to make the CO SSPA power up behavior similar to that of a VSAT BUC, extra functions were added to the Auxiliary I/O. To decouple CO SSPA style muting, an additional wire jumper between pins G and B has to be installed on the M&C connector, J5. Auxiliary logic has to be altered as well. See Table 10-6 Data Address 12. Select Startup in Low Z State for power up with RF ON state and Startup in High Z State for RF OFF power up. If Auxiliary logic is set to normal Auxiliary fault operation (Ignore, Logic Low, Logic High), the CO SSPA muting schema will be implemented and Aux fault becomes available for system usage.
