Il forno è munito di una valvola ad alta tensione chiamata Magnetrón, atta a trasformare l'energia elettrica in energia a microonde. Tali onde elettromagnetiche vengono convogliate all'interno del forno da una guida d'onda, e sono distribuite da un espansore metallico oppure da un piatto girevole.

All'interno del forno, le microonde si propagano in tutte le direzioni, vengono riflesse dalle pareti metalliche e penetrano uniformemente nei cibi.
