Editing methods (continued)

Tips

If the other VCR has a LANC jack of 5-pin DIN type, connect with the VK- 810 Control L connecting cable (not supplied).

The jacks labeled CONTROL L or REMOTE have the same function as LANC jacks.

Notes

The VCR (recorder) receives the time code data from the LANC jack only when the other VCR (player) is set to show the time code indications.

If this VCR cannot control the other VCR, check the settings of “LANC MODE” and “SHUTTLE MODE” on both VCRs.

LANC jack

When you connect the LANC jacks on this VCR and the other VCR, this VCR can control the other VCR (player.) You can switch the VCR you can control, using the PLAYER button and the RECORDER button on the operation panel.

The LANC connection transmits signals such as control signals, time code and time counter data and status data.

When connecting VCRs with the LANC cable, you need to set the LANC mode for each VCR, using the menu or switch.

On the VCR that controls the other VCR: set LANC mode to “M”.

On the VCR to be controlled from the other equipment: set LANC mode to “S”.

In the case of a camcorder that does not have a LANC mode switch or a LANC mode menu, LANC mode is usually set to “S”.

Time code

On this VCR, time codes are recorded automatically during recording. To check the time code, press COUNTER SELECT until the time code appears in the display window.

This VCR can cope with both DF (Drop Frame) and NDF (Non Drop Frame). Change the “TIME CODE” setting on the SET UP MENU, if necessary. (page 21) (DSR-30 only)

Drop frame mode

The time code runs at 30 frames/second, while the NTSC color television system runs at about 29.97 frames/second. This means that a length of 1 hour as indicated by time code is longer than the actual clock time of 1 hour. Drop frame mode eliminates this discrepancy. It adjusts the running of time code by dropping two frames from the time code value at the beginning of each minute except every tenth minute.

Non drop frame mode

Non drop frame mode ignores the difference between the time code and the actual clock time. This mode is also called “Full frame mode” or “Normal frame mode.” Since it does not drop the frames, a length of 1 day as indicated by time code is longer than the actual clock time by about 86 seconds. It is not recommended to use this mode when you edit the tape by deciding the time of the program by second, as it is based on the actual frame number of the time code.

On this VCR, the time code is recorded sequently from “0H00M00S00F,” from the beginning of the tape. However, if there is a blank section on the tape, time code is reset and recorded from “0H00M00S00F” again from the section just after the blank section. When you duplicate a tape using the DUPLICATE W/TC (Duplicate with Time Code) button on the operation panel, the same time codes recorded on the other VCR (player) are recorded on the tape.

If the time codes are out of sequence, you may not be able to execute correct editing.
