Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup

5-12 SATA and Floppy Drive Connections

SATA Ports

Six Serial ATA (SATA) ports (I-SATA 0~5) are located on the X8SIL-F motherboard (4 SATA ports on the X8SIL). These Serial Link connections provide faster data transmission than traditional Parallel ATA. See the table on the right for pin definitions.

Floppy Connector

The floppy connector is located next to the DIMM slots on the motherboard.

Floppy Drive Connector Pin Definitions (Floppy)

See the table on the right for pin definitions.

Note the following when connecting the floppy cable:

The floppy disk drive cable has seven twisted wires.

A red mark on a wire typically des- ignates the location of pin 1.

A single floppy disk drive ribbon cable has 34 wires and two con- nectors to provide for two floppy disk drives. The connector with twisted wires always connects to drive A, and the connector that does not have twisted wires al- ways connects to drive B.
