Connector and Adapter Care Requirements
This section describesproper care and use of the connector and adapter for
electricalmodules, including protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD),
cleaning connectors, and the assembly and torquing of connectors.
Protection againstES D is essentialwhile connecting, inspecting, or cleaning
connectorsattached to a static-sensitive circuit. Static discharges too small to be
felt cancause permanent damage, and devices under test can carry anelectrostat-
ic charge. To prevent damage to devices and components, use the procedures that
follow.
Overview Toprotect against ESD Controlelem ents& resources
ESDprevention 1. Always use a groundedant istatic mat in front of your
test equipment.
2. Always weara heel strapwhen working i n an areawi th
aconduct ive floor, even i f you are uncertain about its
conductivity.
3. Always weara grounded wrist st raphavi nga1MΩ
resistori n series when handling components and
devices orwhen m aking connections to the test set.
ESDprocedures 1. Connectyour wrist st rapt o the antistatic connector on
thefront of your instrument. Referto the illustration at
right. Connect
wriststrap
2. When cleaning, ground the hose nozzle to prevent ESD.
3. Set the pressurecorrectly. See Cleaning Connectors on
page 39.
Visualinspection, and, if necessary, cleaning should be done every time a
connection is made. Making a connection wi th a damaged or dirty connector can
damage connectorsbeyond repair. In some cases, magnification is necessary to
see damageto a connector. However, defects visible only under magnification
are not theonly thing to look for. Use the following guidelines when checking
connectors:
HExamine connectorsfirst for obvious damage and defects such as worn
plating on the interface; broken, bent, or mi saligned center conductors; and
deformed threads.
