4. Tektronix part nu mber. Solderi ng Techniques

WA RN I N G

To avoid electric shock hazard, disconnect the instrum ent from the power source before soldering.

The reliability and accuracy of this instrume nt can be maintained only if proper soldering techniques are used . when repai ring or replaci ng parts. General soldering techniques which apply to mai ntenance of any precisio n electronic equi pment should be used when working on this inst rument. Use only 60/40 rosin-core, electronic grade sol der. The choice of soldering iron is determi ned by the repair to be made.

When sol dering on circuit boards or small wiring, use only α 15 watt, pencil type soldering iron. Α higher wattage soldering iron can cause the etched circuit wiring to separate from the board base mater i al and melt the i nsulation from small wiring. Always keep the soldering iron tip properly tinned to ensurethe best heat transfer to the solder joint. Apply only enough heat to remove the component or to make α good solderjoint. To protect heat sensitive co mponents, hold the component lead with α pai r of long- nose pliers between the co mponent body and the solder joint. Use α solder removi ng wick to remove excess sol der from con nectio ns or to clean circuit board pads.

Semiconductors

To remove in-line integrated circuits use an extracti ng tool . This tool is availa ble from Tektronix, Inc.; order Tektronix Part No. 003-0619-00. If an extracti ng tool is not available, use care to avoid damaging the pi ns. Pull slowly and evenly on both ends of the integrated circuit . Try to avoi d disengagi ng one end before the other end .

Multipin Connectors

The pin connectors used to co nnect the wires to the interconnecting pi ns are clamped to the endsof thewires. To replace damaged multi-pin connectors, removethe old pin connector from the holder. Do this by inserting α scribe between the connector and the holder and prying the connector from the hol der. Clamp the replacement connector to the wire. Reinstall the connector in the hol der.

If the i ndividual end lead pin connectors are removed from the plastic holder, note the order of the i ndividual wires for correct replacement in the holder. For proper replacement see Fig. 5-3.

I WARNING

Use caution when operating this instrument with the side panels removed as dangerous voltages are present.

To remove the top, bottom and side panels, remove the four screws attaching the feet to the rear of the instrument and slide the panelstothe rear. See Fig . 5-4. To remove the interface circuit board, remove the plug-i n gui de rails and air baffles shown in Fig . 5-5. Next remove the interface circuit board support by removing t he screws shown in Fig. 5-6 and Fig . 5-10 . Before removi ng the main interface circuit board, make certain the connections to the board are either unplugged or unsoldered. Remove the six screws holding the board to the mai nframe. See Fig . 5-7. To remove the rear panel, removet he screws shown in Fig . 5-8. Afte r these screws are removed, the rear panel may be laid back for easier access to the do power supply board. After removing the rear panel, the do power supply circuit board may be removed. Remove the seve n screws shown in Fig. 5-9.

WARNING

Da ngerous voltages may be present on the filter capacitors on the do power supply boa rd for several minutes after line voltage removal.
