Type

Cards

Description and Installation Requirements

1:1

E1-N-14

Pairs one working card with one protect card. The protect card

DS3i-N-12

should be installed in an odd-numbered slot and the working card

in an even-numbered slot next to the protect slot towards the

E3-12

TCC2, for example: protect in Slot 1, working in Slot 2; protect

STM1E

in Slot 3, working in Slot 4; protect in Slot 15, working in Slot 14.

1:1 protection can be revertive or non-revertive. For more

information, see the Cisco ONS 15454 SDH Reference Manual.

1:N

E1-N-14

1:N protection allows a single card to protect up to five (four for

E1-42N

the DS3i_N-12 card) working cards of the same electrical level.

A E1-N-14 card protects E1-N-14 cards and a DS3i-N-12 card

DS3i-N-12

protects DS3i-N-12 cards.

STM1E

1+1

Any STM-N

Pairs a working STM-N card/port with a protect STM-N

card/port. For multiport STM-N cards, the protect port must

match the working port on the working card. For example, Port 1

of an STM-1 card can only be protected by Port 1 of another

STM-1 card. The ports on multiport cards must be either working

or protect. You cannot mix working and protect ports on the same

card. Cards do not need to be in adjoining slots. 1:1 protection can

be revertive or non-revertive, unidirectional or bidirectional.

Y Cable

MXP_2.5_10G

Pairs a working transponder or muxponder card/port with a

TXP_MR_10G

protect transponder or muxponder card/port. The protect port

must be on a different card than the working port, and it must be

TXP_MR_2.5G

the same card type as the working port. The working and protect

port numbers must be the same, that is, Port 1 can only protect

Port 1, Port 2 can only protect Port 2, etc.

Splitter

TXPP_MR_2.5G

Splitter protection is automatically provided with the

TXPP_MR_2.5G card.

Unprotected

Any

Unprotected cards can cause signal loss if a card fails or incurs a

signal error. However, because no card slots are reserved for

protection, unprotected schemes maximize the service available

for use on the ONS 15454 SDH. Unprotected is the default

protection type.

Cisco ONS 15454 SDH specifications

Cisco Systems has long been a leader in networking and telecommunications, and one of its notable products is the Cisco ONS 15454 SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) system. Designed to support a wide range of networking applications, this platform is particularly suited for the transportation of voice, data, and video across metropolitan and wide area networks.

One of the main features of the Cisco ONS 15454 is its modular architecture, allowing for flexible configurations to meet varying demands. This flexibility enables service providers and enterprises to scale their networks as needed, easily adding or removing modules without significant downtime. The system can accommodate multiple technologies, including SONET, SDH, and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), making it an excellent solution for diverse environments.

Another critical characteristic of the ONS 15454 is its high-capacity transport capabilities. It can handle up to 400 Gbps in a single chassis, enabling operators to manage larger amounts of data traffic efficiently. This scaling is crucial for meeting the ever-increasing requirements for bandwidth in modern networks, especially with the rise of cloud services and video streaming.

Furthermore, the Cisco ONS 15454 supports various interface options, including Ethernet, TDM, and fiber channel, enabling operators to adapt the system to their existing infrastructures. This compatibility simplifies integration with legacy systems, allowing for a smoother transition to more advanced technologies.

Cisco has also placed a strong emphasis on network management and operational efficiency with the ONS 15454. Integrated management tools provide real-time monitoring and diagnostics, facilitating proactive maintenance and reducing operational costs. The system is designed for high reliability, featuring built-in redundancy and failover capabilities to ensure continuous service availability.

The ONS 15454's versatility extends to its support for various service types, ranging from basic voice services to complex data applications. It can effectively create service level agreements (SLAs) and prioritize traffic, enhancing the quality of service for critical applications.

In conclusion, the Cisco ONS 15454 SDH platform stands out for its modular design, high capacity, adaptability to different technologies, and robust management capabilities. It serves as a reliable backbone for network operators seeking to future-proof their infrastructures while addressing the dynamic demands of modern communication services.
