ÆThe .rmvb files also work fine from CD‐ROM or DVD‐ROM. While most software tools, such as Microsoft PowerPoint, don’t allow RealMedia files to be directly embedded in them, the files play well from the disc in the RealOne player.

RealMedia is also a good high‐definition playback solution.

RealMedia Video Codecs

RealMedia supports a smaller set of video codecs than the other formats. The most recent codec is always the best choice. The options are:

RealVideo 10

RealVideo 9

RealVideo 8

RealVideo G2

Realmedia audio codecs

Unlike other formats, a RealAudio codec is defined by a combination of a codec, data rate, sample rate, and channels. Instead of picking a codec and other parameters, the user picks an inclusive combination. Another twist with the RealMedia audio support is that many tools require audio codecs to be specified for video and music content, for both video and audio files and audio‐only files. The user picks the one based on the mode the file was encoded with. It’s important for the user to pick the correct setting for the mode that is actually being used.

ÆThe following audio codecs are available:

RealAudio 10

RealAudio 10 lossless

RealAudio 10 Multichannel

RealAudio 8 Stereo Music

RealAudio 8 Surround

RealAudio Speech

RealAudio Stereo Music

RealAudio Music
