Troubleshooting

If you are having a problem with your unit, check this list for a possible solution before calling for service.

If you cannot solve the problem from the hints given here, or the unit has been physically damaged, call a qualified person, such as your dealer, for service.

Symptom

Power does not come on.

Operations are disabled.

No sound is heard.

Unable to operate the unit by the remote control.

Hard to listen to broadcasts because of noise.

Loaded discs, MD, and cassette cannot be ejected.

The disc does not play.

The disc sound is discontinuous.

No picture appears on the screen.

No picture is displayed on the TV screen, the picture is blurred, or the picture is divided into two parts.

DVD does not play back.

The left and right edges of the picture are missing on the screen.

No subtitle appears on the display though you have selected the initial subtitle language.

Audio language is different from the one you have selected as the initial audio language.

Unable to record on an MD.

Impossible to record on a tape.

Operations are disabled.

Possible Cause

The power cord is not connected to an AC outlet.

The built-in microprocessor has malfunctioned due to external electrical interference.

Connections are incorrect or loose.

A pair of headphones is connected.

The path between the remote control and the remote sensor on the unit is blocked.

The batteries are exhausted.

You are using the remote control too far from the unit.

Antennas are disconnected.

The AM loop antenna is too close to the unit.

The FM antenna is not properly extended and positioned.

The AC power cord is not plugged in.

The Disc Lock function is in use.

The disc is upside down.

The disc is scratched or dirty.

The video cord is not connected correctly.

Incorrect color system is selected.

An incorrect input has been selected on the TV or monitor.

The PROGRESSIVE indicator are flashing though the unit is connected to a TV which does not support progressive video input, such as a conventional TV.

The color system is not set correctly. Parental lock is in use.

“4:3 PS” is selected when viewing on a conventional TV (aspect ratio 4:3).

You are using a playback MD.

The MD is write-protected.

Small tabs on the back of the cassette are removed.

The built-in microprocessor may malfunction due to external electrical interference.

Action

Insert the plug into the socket.

Unplug the AC power cord then plug it back in.

Check all connections and make corrections. (See pages 6 to 9.)

Unplug the headphones from the PHONES jack.

Remove the obstruction.

Replace the batteries. (See page 6.)

Signals cannot reach the remote sensor. Move closer to the unit.

Reconnect the antenna correctly and securely.

Change the position and direction of the AM loop antenna.

Extend FM antenna and orient to the best reception position.

Plug in the AC power cord.

Cancel the Disc Lock function. (See page 23.)

Put the disc in with the label side up.

Clean or replace the disc. (See page 86.)

Connect the video cord correctly.

Select correct color system (See page 9.)

Select the correct input on the TV or monitor.

Press PROGRESSIVE until the PROGRESSIVE indicator turns off on the display. (See page 12.)

Change the color system. (See page 9.) Unlock the parental lock. (See page 81.) Select “4:3 LB.” (See pages 78.)

Some DVDs are programed to always display no subtitle initially. If this happens, press SUB TITLE after starting play. (See pages 29 and 78.)

Some DVDs are programed to always use the original language initially. If this happens, press AUDIO after starting play. (See page 29.)

Change it with a recordable MD.

Unprotect the MD. (See page 45.) Cover the holes with adhesive tape.

Unplug the AC power cord and then plug it back in.
