Configuration Rules

for Gigabit

Ethernet

Gigabit Ethernet is designed to run over several media:

Single-mode fiber optic cable, with connect ions up to 5 km

(3.1 miles). Support for distances over 5 km is supp orted depending

on the module specification.

Multimode fiber optic cable, with connection s up to 550 m (1804 ft).
Category 5 cabling, with connections up to 100 m (328 ft).

The different types of Gigabit Ethernet media and their s pecifications are

detailed in Tabl e 7.
