This section lists some basic checks you can do for most monitors. Check the docu-
mentation that came with the monitor for fault indications and troubleshooting
procedures specific to your monitor. If you purchased the monitor from Dell, you can
also find troubleshooting information on Dell’s World Wide Web site (refer to
Chapter8, “Getting Help”).
If you have no picture, try the following:
Make sure the power button is completely depressed (a click is heard when the
button is pressed).
If the power indicator is lit, turn contrast and brightness to their maximum
settings.
Turn off the computer system, and reseat the power cable to the monitor and
power source. Verify that the video-interface cable connector is firmly at tac hed to
the video card connector and secured with the captive screws. Then reboot the
computer system.
Diskette-drive access
indicator The diskette-drive access indi cator sho uld qu ickly flash on
and off when you access data on the diskette drive. You
can test the drive by inserting a diskette in the drive,
double-clicking My Computer, and then double-clicking
the icon for drive A. If the diskette-drive access indicator
does not light up, refer to “Drives” found later in this
chapter.
Hard-disk drive
access indicator The hard-disk drive access indicator should quickly flash
on and off when you access data on the hard-disk drive.
You can test the drive by double-clicking My Computer
and then double-clicking the icon for drive C. If the hard-
disk drive access indicator does not light up, refer to
“Drives” found later in this chapter.

Unfamiliar constant
scraping or grinding
sound when you
access a drive
Make sure the sound is not caused by the app lication you
are running. The sound could be caused by a hardware
malfunction. See Chapter 8, “Getting Help,” for in struc-
tions on obtaining technical assistance from Dell.
Absence of a familiar
sound When you turn on your system, you can hear the hard-
disk drive spin up, and the system tries to access the boot
files from the hard-disk drive or the diskette drive. If the
system boots, refer to Chapter 7, “Running the Dell Diag-
nostics.” If your system does not boot, refer to Chapter 8,
“Getting Help.”
