Reseat all speaker connections and make sure they are inserted fully. Verify that
the audio jacks are not bent or broken.
Turn up the volume by clicking the yellow speaker icon in the Windows 95 or
Windows NT taskbar and adjusting the volume setting.
Plug the speakers into the headphone jack of the CD-ROM or di gital versati le disc
read-only memory (DVD-ROM) drive, make sure the headph one v olume con trol is
turned up, and play a music CD.

If you are experiencing problems with a modem, perform the following checks.

If you have any other telephone devices plugged into thi s line, such as answering
machines, dedicated fax machines, or line splitters, then bypass them and plug
the modem cable directly into the telephone connector on the wall.
Reseat the cable connections.
Try a different cable; if you are using a long cable, try a short one.
Check that the modem cable is connected to the jack labeled “TELCO” or
“LINE” on the modem.
Plug a telephone cable into the jack labeled “PHONE” on the modem and listen
for a dial tone.
Disconnect the cable from the modem connector and plug it directly into a tele-
phone. Listen for a dial tone.
Low connection speeds can be caused by line noise. If you have persistent prob-
lems, contact your telephone company to check for data noise and imbalanced
lines.

If you have diskette drive problems, perform the following checks:
Make sure the diskette is not write-protected if you are trying to copy data to it.
Try a different diskette in the drive. If the new diskette works, the original one
may be defective.
Check drive operations in the MS-DOS and Windows operating systems.
Check the settings on the Diskette Options Submenu of the system setup pro-
gram as described in Appendix B, “System Setup Program.”
