Adapters, Overview and Configuration 151
The easiest way to configure non-graphic PCI adapters (such as LAN
adapters, and so on) installed after IPL is to proceed using SMIT, enter:
smit devices
-> Install/Configure Devices Added After IPL
You may have to provide a source for the device driver software package for
the new PCI device if it is not yet installed.
If, for whatever reason, you need to install software but you are unable to
boot from hard disk or you have no working display, you may install the
software while in maintenance mode.
5.3.2.2 Configuring SCSI Devices
The RS/6000 43P Series systems have at least one integrated Ultra SCSI
Interface.
The process of configuring SCSI devices on the 7043 Series is exactly the
same as it is on other RS/6000 Systems. This means you can use the SMIT
support to configure devices that are added after IPL, enter the cfgmgr
command, or reboot the system. However, remember that unlike with AIX
Version 3.2, on AIX Version 4 the software support for the device you are
adding may not yet be installed. Thus, check to see if the device driver for
your SCSI device is installed. If not, use SMIT to configure the device and
provide an input device or directory where the installation software can be
accessed.
The Web-Based System Management tool, wsm, provides a similar function
as SMIT, but using a visually rich GUI and task oriented dialogs.
Do not use the above procedure if you want to add or replace graphic
adapters because if anything goes wrong (for example, a required device
driver is not yet installed, and so forth) you will disable your graphics
console.
To add or change PCI graphic adapters, proceed as described in 5.2,
“Graphics Adapters” on page 135.
