Removing and Replacing Defective FRUs
This section provides inform ati on on removing and replacing
FRUs.
Do not damage any part. Only certified and trained
personnel should servic e the WorkPad z50 Mobil e
Companion.
The arrows in the “Remov als and Replacements
section show the direction of movement to remove a
FRU, or to turn a screw to release the FRU . The
arrows are marked in numeric order , in squ ar e
callouts, to show the c orrect sequence of remo val.
When other FRUs must be removed before the failing
FRU is removed, they ar e listed at the top of t he
page.
To replace a FRU, revers e the removal proced ure
and follow any notes that pertain to r ep l ac em en t .
When replacing a FRU, us e the correct screw s ize as
shown in the procedures.

Before the WorkPad z50 is powered - on af t er FRU
replacement, make sure all screws, springs, or other
small parts are in place and are not left loos e inside the
WorkPad z50. Verify this by shaking the WorkP ad z50
and listening for rattlin g sounds. Metallic parts or metal
flakes can cause electric al shorts.

The battery pack contai ns small amounts of h armful
substances. Do not disassemble it, throw it into fire or
water, or short-circuit it. Dispose of the battery pack or
backup battery as required by local ordinances or
regulations. Use only t he battery in the appr opriate parts
listing when replacing t he battery pack. Us e of an
incorrect battery can result in ig nit i on or explosion of the
battery.

Before removing any FRU, place the WorkPad z50 into
suspend mode, unplug all power c ords f r om el ectrical
outlets, then disconnect any interconnecting cables and
remove the battery pack and back up b att eries.
CAUTION:
If all power sources are removed from the Wor kPad z50,
all data and applications will be lost. If the problem is
considered a software problem stored o n DRAM
memory, approach the problem from that standpoint
before removing all power sources.
Attention: The mainboard is sensitive to, and c an be
damaged by, electrostatic dis c h arg e.
