Handling ElectrostaticDischarge-Sensitive Devices
Any computer part c ontaining transistors or integrated
circuits (Ics) should b e considered sensitive t o electrostatic
discharge (ESD). ESD damage can occur when there is a
difference in charge between ob j ects . Pr ot ect against ESD
damage by equalizing the charge so that the machine, the
part, the work mat, and the person han dl in g th e part are all
at the same charge.
Notes

1. Use product-specific ESD procedures when th ey

exceed the requirements noted her e.

2. Make sure that the ESD protective devices you

use have been certified (ISO 9000) as fully
effectiv e.
When handling ESD-sensiti ve p ar ts :
Keep the parts in prot ective packages until th ey are
inserted into the produc t.
Avoid contact with other people.
Wear a grounded wrist strap against your ski n t o
eliminate static on your body. Approved static s traps
protect the user from high-oper ating voltages (110V).
Prevent the part from touching your clothin g. Most
clothing is insulative and retains a charge even when
you are wearing a wrist strap.
Use the black side of a grounded work m at to pr ovide
a static-free work surf ace. The mat is especial ly
useful when handling ESD-sens it ive devices. Select
a grounding system, such as those lis t ed below, to
provide protection that meets th e sp ecif ic service
requirement.
Note
The use of a grounding system is desirable but not required
to protect ag ainst ESD d amage.
- Attach the ESD ground clip to any frame
ground, ground braid, or green- w ir e gr ou nd .
- Use an ESD c ommon ground or referenc e
point when working on a double-ins ul at ed or
battery-operated system. You c an us e c oax or
connector-outside shells on th es e s yst ems .
- Use the round ground-prong of the AC plug on
AC-operated computers.
Grounding Requirements
Electrical grounding of t he computer is requir ed for operator
safety and correct syst em function. Proper grou nding of the
electrical outlet can be verifi ed by a certified electrician.
