You can select “DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT,” “D. RANGE COMPRESSION,” and “SURROUND SETTING” only before playback.

• DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT

To connect the unit’s digital output to an external device equipped

with a digital input, this item must be set correctly. See “Output

Signals through the OPTICAL DIGITAL OUTPUT Terminal” on

page 68 for details about the relation between the setting and

output signals.

Select one of the following settings:

PCM ONLY

Select when you connect to the linear PCM digital input

terminal of other audio equipment.

DOLBY DIGITAL/PCM

Select when you connect to the digital input terminal of

a Dolby Digital decoder or an amplifier with a built-in

Dolby Digital decoder.

STREAM/PCM

Select when you connect the digital input terminal of an

amplifier with a built-in MPEG Multichannel, DTS, or

Dolby Digital decoder, or the stand-alone unit of such a

decoder.

• D. (dynamic) RANGE COMPRESSION

You can compress the dynamic range (the difference of the

loudest sound to the softest sound) to enjoy a powerful sound even

at a low volume level when listening to Dolby Digital software.

This is useful when enjoying the Surround sound at night.

The effectiveness varies depends on a software.

SURROUND SETTING

You can enjoy the Surround mode simply by playing back a disc when the surround setting is in use—“AUTO” or “ON.”

This setting takes effect only when the source is disc player. This setting does not affect DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT setting.

Select one of the following settings:

AUTO • If Dolby Digital or DTS multi-channel software is played back, the corresponding Surround mode will be turned on automatically.

If Dolby Surround signal comes in, Dolby Pro Logic will be turned on.

If Linear PCM (used for CD, SVCD, VCD and some DVDs), MPEG Multichannel, or MP3 sound is played back, the Surround mode will be turned off.

ON • If multi-channel software is played back, the corresponding Surround mode—Dolby Digital or DTS—will be turned on automatically.

If 2-channel software is played back, Dolby Pro Logic will be turned on.

OFF The Surround mode will be deactivated for all discs. (The multi-channel signal is mixed down to 2-channel signal.)
