The process of measuring the brightness of the subject to determine the exposure is known as “metering.”

Use this option to set the method of how the camera meters exposure.

The camera uses a wide area of the screen for metering.

The camera meters the entire frame but assigns greatest

 

 

weight to the subject in the center of the frame. The

qCenter-weightedclassic metering for portraits; it preserves background

details while letting lighting conditions in the center of the frame determine exposure.2

The camera meters the area shown by the circle in the center of the frame. This can be used when the subject

r Spot1is much lighter or darker than the background. Ensure that the subject is within the area shown by the circle when shooting.2

1When Focus-coupled metering is set to On and AF area mode (E49) is set to Manual, the brightness of the subject is measured by giving higher priority to the

focus area. See “Focus-coupled Metering” (E58) for more information.

B Notes About Metering

When digital zoom is in effect, Center-weightedor Spot is selected depending on the magnification of an enlargement.

The setting may not be changed when using certain settings of other functions.

C Display on the Shooting Screen

When Center-weightedor Spot is selected, the metering range guide (A16) is displayed (except when digital zoom is used).

When Focus-coupled metering is set to On, the metering range guide for Spot is not displayed.
