Step 4 Focus and Shoot

BNote on Recording Images and Saving Movies

The indicator showing the number of exposures remaining or the indicator showing the maximum movie length flashes while images are being recorded or while a movie is being saved. Do not open

the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover or remove the battery or memory card while an

indicator is flashing. Doing this could result in loss of data, or in damage to the camera or the memory card.

BAutofocus

Autofocus may not perform as expected in the following situations. In some rare cases, the subject may not be in focus despite the fact that the active focus area or the focus indicator lights in green:

Subject is very dark

Objects of sharply differing brightness are included in the scene (e.g. the sun is behind the subject makes that subject appear very dark)

No contrast between the subject and surroundings (e.g. a portrait subject, wearing a white shirt, is standing in front of a white wall)

Several objects are at different distances from the camera (e.g. the subject is inside a cage)

Subjects with repeating patterns (window blinds, buildings with multiple rows of similarly shaped windows, etc.)

Subject is moving rapidly

In the situations noted above, try pressing the shutter-release button halfway to refocus several times, or focus on another subject positioned at the same distance from the camera as the actual desired subject, and use focus lock (A76).

BWhen the Subject Is Close to the Camera

If the camera cannot focus, try shooting with macro mode or the Close-upscene mode (A45).

CTo Make Sure You Do Not Miss a Shot

If you are concerned that you might miss a shot, press the shutter-release button all the way without first pressing it halfway.

CFlash

If the subject is dimly lit, the flash will pop up automatically when you press the shutter-release button halfway when the flash mode is set to U (auto; default setting). The flash will fire when you press the shutter-release button all the way down. See “Using the Flash (Flash Modes)” (A60) for more information.

Lower the flash by gently pushing it down. When not taking pictures, lower the flash.
