Selecting the metering mode

Mode switch: /

The camera measures the brightness to determine the exposure. This function lets you select the following two metering modes to determine which portion of the subject to use for measuring the brightness.

Multi-pattern metering (no indicator)

The image is divided into multiple regions and metering is performed for each region. The camera judges the subject position and background brightness, and determines a well-balanced exposure.

The factory setting is multi-pattern metering.

Spot metering ( )

Metering is performed for only a portion of the subject. This lets you adjust the exposure to the subject even when the subject is backlit or there is strong contrast between the subject and the background. Position the spot metering cross hair on one point of the subject you want to shoot.

To focus on the metering position, setting

9(Focus) to [Center AF] is recommended (page 47).
