Exploring Your Options

Using PC Cards

Check the documentation that came with the PC Card to see

if it conforms to the PCMCIA 2.1 standard, or later. Other

cards may work with your computer, but are likely to be

much more difficult to set up and use.

PC Card supporting software

The operating system provides the Card and Socket Services

for your PC Card and is installed automatically. Even if your

PC Card comes with its own version of Card and Socket

Services, you should use the files included in the Windows®

XP operating system.

1If your PC Card does not support hot swapping, save

your data and turn off the computer before inserting the

PC Card. For more information, see “Hot swapping” on

page 183.

2Hold the PC Card with the arrow or main label side up

and the connector side toward the slot.

Your program performs an illegal operation. Problems when you turn on the computer The computer will not start. The computer starts but, when you press a key, nothing happens. The computer is not accessing the hard disk or the external diskette drive. The AC adapter and power cable work correctly, but the battery will not charge. The battery appears not to power the computer for as long as it usually does. Keyboard problems The keyboard produces unexpected characters. Display problems The display is blank. The screen does not look right. The built-in screen flickers. The display mode is set to Simultaneous and the external display device does not work. Disk drive problems You are having trouble accessing a disk, or one or more files appear to be missing. Error-checking Your hard disk seems very slow. Your data files are damaged or corrupted. Some programs run correctly but others do not. A diskette will not go into the external diskette drive. The computer displays the Non-system disk or disk error DVD-ROM or DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive problems You cannot access a disc in the drive. You press the disc eject button, but the drive tray does not slide out. Some discs run correctly, but others do not. WinDVD problems: general issues WinDVD controls are disabled. Playback performance is poor. The Root or Title menu does not open. WinDVD performance decreases after making a system change. Slow playback performance. WinDVD problems: content issues WinDVD will not function properly with debug software installed. Modem problems The modem will not receive or transmit properly. The modem is on, set up properly and still will not transmit or receive data. Develop good computing habits Save your work frequently. On a regular basis, back up the information stored on your hard disk. Read the users guides.
