System indicator panel

The AC pow er li ght glows green when the computer is

connected to an external power source.

The on/off light glows green when the computer is on. The

light glows amber when the computer is in Stand By mode.

The battery light indicates the main battery’s current charge.

It glows green when the battery is fully charged. It glows

amber while the battery is being charged. It does not glow if

the external power source is disconnected or if the battery is

completely discharged. For more information on determining

remaining battery power, see “Monitoring battery power” on

page 119.

The hard disk drive light flashes green while the hard disk

drive is being accessed.

The disc/disk activity light flashes green when the diskette

drive, the DVD-ROM or the DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive is

being accessed.

CAUTION: Never turn off the computer while any drive is in use.

Doing so may damage the media in use and result in loss of data.

The AC adapter and power cable work correctly, but the battery will not charge. The battery appears not to power the computer for as long as it usually does. Keyboard problems The keyboard produces unexpected characters. Display problems The display is blank. The screen does not look right. The built-in screen flickers. The display mode is set to Simultaneous and the external display device does not work. Disk drive problems You are having trouble accessing a disk, or one or more files appear to be missing. Error-checking Your hard disk seems very slow. Your data files are damaged or corrupted. Some programs run correctly but others do not. A diskette will not go into the external diskette drive. The computer displays the Non-system disk or disk error DVD-ROM or DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive problems You cannot access a disc in the drive. You press the disc eject button, but the drive tray does not slide out. Some discs run correctly, but others do not. WinDVD problems: general issues WinDVD controls are disabled. Playback performance is poor. The Root or Title menu does not open. WinDVD performance decreases after making a system change. Slow playback performance. WinDVD problems: content issues WinDVD will not function properly with debug software installed. The computer stops working (hangs) when you insert a PC Card. Hot swapping (removing one PC Card and inserting another without turning the computer off) fails. Modem problems The modem will not receive or transmit properly. The modem is on, set up properly and still will not transmit or receive data. Develop good computing habits Save your work frequently.
