INTRODUCTION

Readthis OperationSection and the sepa-
rateEngineOwner's Manualbefore you
startthe engine. Then,take the time to fa-
miliarizeyourself with the basic operation
ofthe tiller before using it in the garden.
Findanopen, levelarea and practice using
thetiller controls without the tines engag-
ingthe soil (put tines in"travel" setting).
Onlyafter you've becomecompletely fa-
miliar with thetiller shouldyou begin using
itin the garden.
BREAK-IN OPERATION
Performthe following maintenanceafter
thefirst two (2) hours of new operation
(seeMaintenance Sectioninthis manual
andin the EngineOwner's Manual).
1. Changeengine oil.
2. Checkforloose or missing hardwareon
unit. Tightenor replaceas needed.
3. Checktension on forward drive belt.
4. Checktransmission gearoil level.

STARTINGANDSTOPPING

Pre-StartChecklist
Withthe spark plug wire disconnected
fromthe spark plug, perform thefollowing
checksand services before each use:
1. Readthe Safetyand ControlsSections
inthis manual. Readthe separate Engine
Owner'sManual provided with the unit.
2. Putthe wheels in the WHEELDRIVE
position (wheel pins must bethrough
holesin wheel hubs and wheel shaft).
3. Checkunit for loose or missing hard-
ware. Serviceas required.
4. Checkengine oil level. See Engine
Owner'sManual.

7. Fillthefuel tank with gasolineaccording
tothe directions in the separate Engine
Owner'sManual. Follow all instructions
andsafety rules carefully.
8. Attach spark plug wire to spark plug.
StartingtheEngine
Thefollowing steps describe how to start
andstop the engine.

1. Completethe Pre-Start Checklist on
this page.
2. Putthe wheelsin the WHEELDRIVEpo-
sition (seeWheeIDrivePins in Section 3 of
this manual).
,_ WARNING: Tohelp
preventserious personal injury
ordamageto equipment:
Beforestartingengine,potbothwheels
in the WHEEL DRIVE position. Never
have wheels in FREEWHEELposition
when engine is running. When the
wheelsare in FREEWHEEL,theydo not
hold backthe tiller and the tines could
propelthetiller rapidly
wardor backward.
Beforestarting engine, pot Forward
Clutch Bail (all models) and Reverse
ClutchControl(Models 634F/634B only)
in neutral (disengaged) positionsby re-
leasinglevers.
Never run engine indoorsor in en-
closed, poorly ventilated areas. Engine
exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an
odorlessanddeadlygas.
Avoidenginemufflerandnearby areas.
Temperaturesintheseareas mayexceed
150° F.
3. Movethe Depth Regulator Lever all the
waydown to the "travel" position, so that
thetines clear the ground.
4. Releaseall controls on the tiller.
5. On engine'swith afuel shut-off valve,
turnvalve toopen position, as instructed
inthe separate EngineOwner's Manual.
6. Put ignition switch and/or throttle con-
trol lever located on engine in the "ON",
"RUN", "FAST"or "START"position, as in-
structed in the EngineOwner's Manual.
7. Chokeorprime engine, asinstructed in
EngineOwner'sManual.
8. Put one hand on fuel tank to stabilize
unitwhen pulling starter rope handle.
Thenuse recoil starter to start engine, as
instructed in the EngineOwner's Manual.
Whenenginestarts, gradually move choke
lever(if so equipped) to "NO CHOKE",
"CHOKEOFF"or "RUN" position.
9. Usethe "FAST"throttle speed setting
whentilling.
