FORWARDCLUTCHBAILADJUSTMENT
If the ForwardClutch Bail does not func-
tion properly,first checkthat the forward
drivebelt is adjusted properly (see Check-
ing andAdjusting ForwardDrive Belt Ten-
sion). Ifthis fails to correct the problem,
contactTroy-Bilt LLCor your authorized
dealerfor serviceadvice.
CHECKING AND ADJUSTING RE-
VERSE DRIVE BELT TENSION
(Models 634F/634B only)
It is important to maintain correct tension
onthe reverse drive belt. A loose belt will
causethetines andwheels to slow down-
or stop completely - even though the en-
gineis running atfull speed.
Whencheckingbelt tension,alsocheckthe
beltfor cracks, cuts or frayed edges and
replaceit as soon as possible.
Checkbelt tension after the first two
hoursof break-in operationand after every
10operating hours.
ToCheckReverseBelt Tension:
1. Stopengine, waitfor all parts to stop
moving anddisconnect sparkplug wire.
2. Removescrew in plastic belt cover and
slidebelt cover (which is attachedto for-
wardclutch cable) out of the way.
3. Haveanassistant pull the Reverse
ClutchControl knob all theway outand
holdit in that position. Measurethe length
ofthe cable wire betweenthe end of the
threadedcableadjuster (A,Figure 5-5) and
theend of theZ-fitting (B) to which the ca-
blewire isattached.
4. Thebelt tension isideal ifthe cablewire
lengthmeasuresbetween 1/8"to 1/4". If it
is lessthan 1/8" (and if there is no reverse
actionwhenthe tiller isrunning),then make
thefollowing adjustments
NOTE:Ifthe lengthis morethan 1/4",no ad-
justmentis needed--as long as the reverse
actionfunctions properly.
5. Releasethe ReverseClutch Control
knob.andthen unthread the innerjam nut
(C,Figure 5-6) oneto two turns. Pull the
threadedcableadjuster (A,Figure 5-6) to
theleft untilthe innerjam nut (C)touches
thebracket.
6. Preventtheinnerjam nut(C)fromturn-
ingand tighten the outer jam nut (D)
againstthe bracket. Preventthe outer jam
nut(D) from turning and tighten the inner
jam nut (C) againstthe bracket.
7. Measurethe gap by repeating Step 3.
Readjustas neededby repeating Steps 5
and6.
8. Reinstall the belt cover.

ReplacementBeltInformation
If the drive belt needsto be replaced,see
yourlocal authorized dealer or refer to the
PartsList for ordering information. Use
onlya factory-authorizedbelt as an "over-
the-counter" belt may not perform satis-
factorily. The procedure requiresaverage
mechanicalabilityand commonly available
tools.
ENGINECLEANING
Keepingthe engineclean will helpto en-
suresmooth operationand prevent dam-
agefrom overheating. Refer to theEngine
Owner'sManual for engine cleaning ser-
viceintervals andinstructions. Besure
thatthe muffler iscool before servicingthe
engine.
AIRCLEANERSERVICE
Theair cleaner filters dirtand dust out of
theair beforeit entersthe carburetor. Op-
eratingthe engine with a dirty, clogged air
filter can causepoor performance and
damageto the engine. Never operatethe
enginewithout the air cleanerinstalled. In-
spectand servicethe air cleanermore of-
tenif operatingin very dusty or dirty
conditions. Referto theengine Owner's
Manualfor air cleanerservice intervalsand
instructions.
ENGINEOILSERVICE
Checkthe engineoil levelbefore eachuse
andafter everyfive hours of continuous
operation.Running the engine when it is
lowon oil will quickly ruin the engine.
It is recommendedthat youchange the
motor oil after every 10hours ofoperation
andeven sooner when operating in ex-
tremelydirty or dusty conditions. Referto
theEngine Owner'sManual for detailed
serviceinstructions.
