StoppingtheEngineandTiller
1.To stop thewheels andtines, releasethe
ForwardClutch Bail(all models) or the Re-
verseClutch Control (Models 634F and
634B)-- whichevercontrol isin use.
2. Tostop the engine, put the ignition
switch and/or thethrottle control lever in
the"OFF" or "STOP"position.
OPERATINGTHETILLER
Thefollowing operating instructionspro-
videguidelines to usingyour tiller effec-
tivelyand safely. Be sureto read Tilling
Tips& Techniquesin this Section before
actuallyputting the tines into the soil.
NOTE:Thisis a traditional "Standard-Ro-
tating-Tine" (SRT) tiller with forward ro-
tatingtines. Itoperatescompletely
differentlyfrom "Counter-Rotating-Tine"
(CRT)tillers orfrom front-tine tillers.
1. Followthe Pro-Start Checklist at the
beginningof this Section. Besure that the
wheelsare in the WHEELDRIVE position.
2. Movethe Depth RegulatorLever all the
waydown, so that thetines clear the
ground. Usethis position when practicing
with thetiller and when traveling between
tilling sites. Before actuallytilling, move
thelever to the desired depth setting (see
Tilling Tips & Techniques).
3. Startengine and allow itto warm up.
Thenput throttle in "FAST" setting.
4. Forforward motion of the wheelsand
tines:
(a) Pull ForwardClutch Bail(Fig. 4-1) up
againsthandlebar. Releasebailto stop for-
wardmotion of wheels and tines.
(b) Whentilling, relaxand letthe wheels
pullthe unit while the tines dig. Walkbe-
hindand a littleto oneside of the unit. Use
onehand, yet keep a light--but secure--
grip on the handlebar(while keepingyour
arm loose). SeeFig.4-2. Letthe unit
moveat its own paceand do not push
downon the handlebarsto try andforce
thetines to dig deeper--this takesweight
offthe wheels, reduces traction, and caus-
esthe tines to try andpropel the tiller.
WARNING: Donot push
downon the handlebarsto try
to makethe tiller till more
deeply.This preventsthe
wheelsfrom holdingthe tiller
backand canallow the tines to
rapidlypropel thetiller forward,
whichcould result in loss of
control, property damage,or
personalinjury.
5. Forreverse motionof the wheels and
tines(Models 634F/634Bonly):
(a)Look behindand exercisecaution when
operatingin reverse. De not till whilein
reverse.
(b) Stop allforward motion. Lift handle-
barwith one handuntil tines are off the
groundand then pull ReverseClutch Con-
trolknob out (seeFig.4-3). Tostop revers-
ing,let goof ReverseClutch Control knob.
(b) Swingthe handlebarto the left so the
rightwheel takesa "step" backward.Next
swingthe handlebarto the right so theleft
wheel"steps" backward.Repeatasneeded.
(c) If longer distances needto be covered
in reverse, shut off the engine, then place
thetwo wheels in FREEWHEEL.
7. ToTurn the TillerAround:
(a) Practiceturning thetiller in a level,
openarea. Bevery carefulto keep your
feetand legs awayfrom the tines.
(b) Tobegin aturn, liftthe handlebarsuntil
thetinesareout ofthegroundandtheengine
andtinesare balancedoverthewheels(Fig.
4-4).
(c) Withtiller balanced,push sidewayson
handlebarto steer indirection of turn (Fig.
4-5). Afterturning, slowlylower tines into
soilto resumetilling.
