CHAPTER 32
Using The SMT
This chapter introduces the SMT (System Management Terminal) and shows you how to use the SMT to configure the VSG.
32.1 About the SMT
The System Management Terminal (SMT) is a menu – driven interface that you use to configure the VSG. Access the SMT using the console port.
Note: You can connect the CONSOLE port on the VSG directly to a computer serial port or to a statement printer (also known as an account generator printer).
Make sure the CONSOLE port is set to the correct mode. Refer to Chapter 3 on page 42 on system settings using the web configurator.
Use the SMT to set general system settings, configure the LAN and WAN settings, change the administrator login password, upgrade firmware or reset the device to the factory defaults.
For advanced configuration, use the web configurator. Refer to the corresponding web configurator chapters for background information.
32.1.1 Establishing a Console Port ConnectionAfter the VSG is directly connected to a computer using the console port, turn on the computer and run a terminal emulation program (for example, Hyper Terminal in Windows) and configure its communication parameters as follows:
•9600 bits per second.
•Parity none
