Inserting a side zipper

UTILITY STITCHES ———————————————————————————————————————————

Inserting a side zipper

Stitching is visible on only one piece of fabric. Use this type of zipper application for side openings and back openings.

The following procedure will describe how to stitch on the left side, as shown in the illustration.

aAttach zigzag foot “J”.

bSew straight stitches up to the zipper opening. With the right sides of the fabric facing each other, sew reverse stitches after reaching the zipper opening.

For details, refer to “Basic stitching” (page 83).

cUsing a basting stitch, continue sewing to the edge of the fabric.

dPress open the seam allowance from the wrong side of the fabric.

ePress the seam allowance so that the right side (the side that will not be stitched) has an extra 3 mm (1/8 inch).

fAlign the zipper teeth with the pressed edge of the fabric having the extra 3 mm (1/8 inch), and then baste or pin the zipper in place.

bBasting stitching

gAttach the presser foot holder to the right pin of zipper foot “I”.

If the stitching will be sewn on the right side, attach the presser foot holder to the left pin of the zipper foot.
