q: Manual Flash
When the Speedlite is used with the EOS-1D series, you can also set
the flash exposure level manually. This is convenient for shooting at a
short distance from the subject. Use a commercially available 18% gray
card and shoot as follows.
1Set the camera and Speedlite settings.
Set the camera’s shooting mode to <q> or <W>.
Set the Speedlite’s flash mode to <q>.
2Focus the subject.
Focus manually.
3Set up an 18% gray card.
Place the gray card at the subject’s position.
In the viewfinder, the entire spot metering circle at the center
should cover the gray card.
4Press the <B> or <7> button. (2)
XThe Speedlite will fire a preflash and the required flash output for
the correct flash exposure is retained in memory.
XOn the right side of the viewfinder, the exposure level indicator
will show the flash exposure level for the standard exposure.
5Set the flash exposure level.
Adjust the Speedlite’s manual flash level and the
aperture so that the flash exposure level aligns with
the standard exposure index.
6Take the picture.
Remove the gray card and take the picture.

Metered Manual Flash Exposures

Metered manual flash exposure is only available with EOS-1D series
cameras.
