Super G3 FaxBoard and Multi Line Fax Board

Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCEsystems that support Super G3 fax capabilitieswith the optional
Super G3 FaxBoard installed can be connected to the Public Switched Telephone Networkfor sending
and receiving offax data. In order to maintain the security of customer’s networks in relation to this
potentialinterface, Canon has designed its Super G3 Fax Boards to function in accordance with the
following securityconsiderations:
Super G3 FaxBoard Communication Mechanism
The modem on the Super G3 FaxBoards does not have Data Modem capability, but only Fax
Modem capability. Asa result, TCP/IP communication through the phone line is impossible.
In addition, there isno functional module such as a Remote Access Service thatenables
communication between a phone line and a networkconnection within the device.
FaxTransmission
The PCFax function can fax documents from the PC via Network, using a Fax driver thatruns
on the PC. However, data transfer from the PCvia Network to the device and data transfer
(FAXtransmission) from the phone line via the G3 FAX board is structurally separated.
FaxReceived
Although a received faxdocument can be accessed from the network through the Confidential
FaxMail Box function inherent in the device or automatically forwarded to a network, it is not
possible to breach the networkin either instance as these capabilities are afforded following
completion offacsimile communication. Since the data stored in the Confidential Fax MailBox
isin a format proprietary to Canon, there is no threat of virus infection. Even if the device
receivesa data file pretending to be a FAX image data but contains a virus, the received data
mustbe decoded first. While trying to decode the virus the phone line will be disconnected
with a decode error and the received data willbe discarded. The Super G3 Fax Boards cannot
receive data files, butare only capable of receiving and decoding facsimile transmissions.
Asa result, virus-laden files sent to an imageRUNNER ADVANCE system via itsphone line
connection cannotbe processed.
FaxPolling
FaxPolling is the only function that enables users to handle documents stored in a polling box.
Anyaction associated with these documents stored in a polling box is performed using G3 Fax
protocols, which provide no meansof accessing a local network.

Other FaxFeatures

FaxForwarding / Mailbox Fax Forwarding
The FaxForwarding function allows imageRUNNER ADVANCE systems equipped with a fax
board to forward inbound faxtransmissions to specific recipients. This is done bysetting
predetermined conditionsor storing faxes in a secure Memory Reception Inbox for later
printing rather than permitting incoming messagesto pile up in an open output tray.
