Setting the Aperture

The aperture adjusts the amount of light entering through the lens.
When you set the aperture, the camera automatically select s a
shutter speed to match the brightness.
Selecting a lower apert ure value (opening the aperture) allo ws you
to blur the background and create a beautiful portrait.
A higher aperture value (closing it) brings the entire range from
foreground to backgr ound into focus. The larger the aperture value,
the greater the range of the image brought into clear focus.
Shooting Mode
1Use the W or X button to select the aperture

value, then shoot.

zIf the shutter speed is shown in red, the image is
underexposed (insuffic ient light) or overexpo sed (too much
light). Adjust the ap erture value using t he W or X button
until the shutter spee d display turns to white.
zSome aperture values cannot be selected depending on
the zoom position.
In this mode, the maximum shutter speed with synchronized
flash is 1/500 second*. The aperture value setting may
therefore be changed au tomatically to match the
synchronized flash spee d even if its valu e was set previous ly.
*For details on using an exter nally mounted flash, see p. 172.
