Appendix Replacing SDRAM DIMMs
Replacing SDRAM DIMMs
This section describes how to re plac e S DRAM DIMMs on th e syst em bo ard. You might need to upgrade
the SDRAM DIMMs for the following reasons:
You have upgraded to a new Cisco IOS feature set or release that requires more memory.
You are usin g v er y lar ge routi ng t able s or man y pr ot ocol s (for e x ampl e, wh en the uni v er sal ga te w ay
is set up as a connect ion device between large exter n al networks and your in ter n al ne tw or k ).
The system board contains three sockets for SDRAM DIMMs (see Figure A-3):
Two sockets hold main memory SDRAM DIMMs. Main memory is used by the CPU to store the
operating configuration, rou ti ng ta bl es, an d qu eu es. The DIMMs can be 128 or 2 5 6 MB , an d t h e
capacity of the DIMM s i n both sockets must ma tch.
For main memory, the tota l capacity is 512 M B (two, 256 MB DI M M s ).
One socket holds a shar ed memory SDRAM DIM M. Shared memory is u sed to store incoming an d
outgoing packets. This DIMM can be 64 or 128 MB.
For shared memory, the tota l capacity is 128 M B (one, 128 MB DIMM ).

Required Tools and Equipment

You need the following tools and equipment:
ESD-preventive wrist st rap
The appropriate SDRAM DIMM(s) for your universal gateway

SDRAM DIMM Replacement

To replace the SDRAMM, follow t hi s p ro ce du r e:
Step 1 Turn the power switch on the universal gateway off and disconnect site power.
Step 2 Remove all interface ca bl es f r om the rear panel of th e un iversa l g at eway.
Warning
Before opening the chassis, disconnect the telephone-network cables to avoid contact with
telephone-network voltages. To see translations of the warnings that appear in this publication, refer
to the Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information document that accompanied this device.
Step 3 Attach an ESD-preventive wr ist s tr ap .
Step 4 Remove the chassis cover. (See t h e in st ru ct io ns in the Removing the Chassis Cover section on
page A1.)
Step 5 Use Figure A- 3 to lo ca te the DIMM you are replacing.
