Glossary

B

Base station - a device in a wireless network that processes and routes data from computers, modems (including satellite modems) and other devices on the network.

D

Dotted decimal notation - An IP address consists of 32 bits. Rather than working with 32 bits at a time, it is a common practice to segment the 32 bits of an IP address into four 8-bit fields called octets. Each octet is converted to a decimal number (the Base 10 numbering system) in the range 0-255 and separated by a period (a dot).

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) - Allows automatic IP address assignment to computers on a network. This simplifies network configuration on your computers. Since your DIRECWAY unit implements DHCP Server functionality, you just need to configure your computers to "Obtain IP Address automatically" (which is the default setting). The computers would get both IP Address and DNS IP Address from your DIRECWAY unit.

E

Ethernet - the technology most commonly used on wired and wireless networks.

Ethernet cable - the cable used in wired networks using Ethernet technology. Category 5 Ethernet cable is recommended for the DW6000.

Ethernet hub - a device in a wired network that processes and routes data from computers, modems (including satellite modems), and other devices on the network.
