Hardware Requirements for the Asynchronous Line Description
Touse the SLIP protocol, you must establish a serial asynchronous connection with
the remote system. Toestablish this connection, the appropriate adapters and I/O
Processor (IOP) that support serial (RS232) ports must be installed.
The following two families of adapters that can be used:
vYoucan use the I/O adapters listed below only with a SLIP connection that uses
an asynchronous line description. You

cannot

use these IOAs with the new PPP
line description.
2609 -- Two-line EIA232/V.24 adapter
2612 -- One-line EIA 232/V.24adapter
vYoucan use the I/O adapters listed below with either the PPP line description or
the asynchronous line description. These IOAs

can

be used with either PPP or
SLIP connections.
2699 -- Two Line WANIOA
2720 -- PCI WAN/TwinaxialIOA
2721 -- PCI Two-Line WANIOA
Tofind out what adapters are installed on your system, do this on the command
line:
===> go hardware
The Hardware Resources Display shown in Figure 83 is shown.
Select option 1., to get the display shown in Figure 84on page 129. Three 2609
communications adapters are configured on the 2623 communications processor.
Each 2609 adapter has two ports, to which you can attach modems.
