Telnet Printer Pass-Through Mode
The Telnetprinter pass-through mode (TPPT) allows the AS/400 user with a Telnet
client that supports printer emulation, to attach printer devices on the AS/400 over
the network. This support is accomplished by negotiating the 3812 or 5553 device
type support with the remote client Telnetapplication.
If you intend to use the TCP/IP Telnetprinter pass-through, check with the client
vendor or with third parties that are known to provide 5250 clients for the availability
of the printer pass-through function.
Clients that support this function are:
vIBM Client Access for Win95
vPersonal Communications Version 4 Release 2
TelnetPrinter Pass-Through (TPPT) delivers the printer data stream between the
two systems as either EBCDIC or ASCII depending on the preferences of the
requesting client.
This topic explains the special considerations for a Telnetuser operating in TPPT
mode.
Figure 125 shows a typical TelnetTPPT-mode environment.
TPPT printing support can only be negotiated with a Telnetclient application on a
system that supports Telnetprinter emulation, for example, Client Access for Win95.
Note: When using Telnetprinter pass-through, the print data must be spooled to a
printer writer queue. (Direct printing to the device is not supported.) To
ensure this, the print file used must specify *YES for the SPOOL parameter.
Telnetprinter pass-through mode supports the following generic EBCDIC printer
devices:
vIBM-3812-1 for single byte character set support (SBCS)
vIBM-5553-B01 for double byte character set devices (DBCS)
