Discrete 2 of 5. A binary bar code sym bology representing each character by a group of five bars, two of which are
wide. The location of wide bars in the group determines which character is encoded; spaces are insign ificant. Only
numeric characters (0 to 9) and START/STOP characters may be encoded.
DRAM. Dynamic random access memory.
DTE. See Data Terminal Equipment.

EAN. European Article Nu mb e r. Th is Eur o pean /International ver sio n of th e UPC pr ov ide s its own cod ing for mat an d
symbology standards. Element dimensions are specified metrically. EAN is used primarily in retail.
Element. Generic term for a bar or space.
Encoded Area. Total linear dimension occupied by all cha racters of a code pattern, including start/stop characters and
data.
ENQ (RS-232). ENQ software handshaking is also suppo rted for the data sent to the host.
ESD. Electro-Static Discharge
EvDO, 1xEV-DO. A wireless radio broa dband data standa rd adopted b y many CDMA m obile phon e se rvice provider s.
It is standardized by 3GPP2, as part of the CDMA2000 family of standards.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) . A TCP/IP application protocol governing file transfer via ne twork or telephone lines. See
TCP/IP.
Flash Disk. An additional megabyte of non-volatile memory for storing application and configuration files.
Flash Memory. Flash memory is nonvolatile, semi-permanent storage that can be electronically erased in the circuit
and reprogrammed. Serie s 9000 mobile computer s use Flash memory to store th e operating system (ROM-DOS),
the terminal emulators, and the Citrix ICA Client for DOS.
FTP. See File Transfer Protocol.

Hard Reset. See Cold Boot.
Hz. Hertz; A unit of frequency equal to one cycle per second.
