CHECKFOROILLEAKS
Beforeeachuse, check your tiller for
signs of an oil leak- usuallya dirty, oily
accumulationeither on the unit or onthe
floor where it has beenparked.
A little seepagearound a cover or oil seal
is usually not a causefor alarm. However,
ifthe oildrips overnight then immediate
attentionis neededas ignoring a leak can
resultin severetransmission damage.
Ifa cover isleaking, try tightening any
loosescrews or bolts. Ifthe fasteners are
tight, a new gasketor oil seal may be
required. Ifthe leakis from arounda
shaftand oil seal, the oil seal probably
needsto be replaced. Seeyourautho-

TRANSMISSIONGEAROILSERVICE

Checkthe transmission gear oil levelafter
every30 hours of operation or whenever
younotice any oil leak. Operating the
tiller when the transmission is low on oil
canresult in severedamage.
A.To CheckTransmissionGearOil
Level:
1. Checkthe gear oil levelwhen the trans-
missionis cool. Gearoil will expand in
warmoperating temperatures and this
expansionwill provide anincorrect oil
levelreading.
2.To checkthe gear oil level(and to add
oil,if necessary),refer to "STEP 5: Check
GearOil Levelin Transmission" in Section
2of this manual.
B.To Drain and Refill the Transmission:
Thetransmission gear oil doesnot need
tobe changed unless it hasbeen contami-
natedwith dirt, sand or metal particles.
1. Propup the left sideof the unit so that
itwill be securelysupported when the left
sidewheel is removed. Removethe left
sidewheel by removing the wheelmount-
ing hardware.
2. Unscrew the plastic gear oil fill plug
from the top of the transmission.
3. Placeaclean panbelow the transmis-
siondrain plug (seeFigure 5-3) and
removethe drain plug. Theoil will start
flowing out of thedrain hole (it may flow
slowly, especiallyin cold temperatures).
4. Removethe transmission gear oil level
checkplug that is locateda few inches
abovethe left side wheel shaft.
5. Whenthe oil stops flowing, tilt the
transmissionforward to drain oilfrom the
rearof the transmission.
6. After draining the oil, clean the threads
ofthe drain plug, applya non-hardening
removablegasket sealantto the threads,
andsecurely reinstall the drainplug.
7. Using a clean funnel, slowly add SAE
140 or SAE85W-140 weight gearoil
(with anAPI rating of GL-4only) to the
transmission. The transmission holds
approximately3-1/4 pints (52-54
ounces). Tilt the tiller slightly backwards
to makesure the gear oil reachesthe rear
(tine) endof thetransmission. Stop
addinggear oil whenit beginsto flow
from the oil level check hole on the side of
thetransmission.
8. Securelyreinstall the oil levelcheck
plug.
9. Securelyreinstall the gearoil fill plug
ontop of thetransmission.
18. Reinstall the wheel and remove the
prop.
