Alwayskeep the battery cables and ter
minalsclean and free of corrosive
build-up.
Aftercleaning the batteryandterminals,
applya light coatof petroleumjelly or
greaseto both terminals
Alwayskeep the rubber boot positioned
overthe positive terminal to prevent
shorting.
Charging
Ifthe tractor hasnot been put into use for
anextended period of time,charge the
batterywith an automotive-type 12-volt
chargerfor a minimum of one hourat six
amps.
JumpStarting
IMPORTANT:Neverjump your tiller's
deadbattery with thebattery of a running
vehicle.
1. Connectend of onejumper cableto the
positiveterminal ofthe good battery,then
the otherend tothe positive terminal of
thedead battery.
2. Connectthe other jumper cable to the
negativeterminal of the good battery,
thento the frame ofthe unit with thedead
battery.
Failureto usethis procedurecould cause
sparking, and the gas in either battery
could explode.
Cleaning
Cleanthe battery by removing it from the
tractor and washing with a baking soda
and water solution. If necessary, scrape
the battery terminals with a wire brush to
remove deposits. Coat terminals and
exposed wiring with grease or petroleum
jelly to prevent corrosion.
BatteryFailures
Somecommon causes for batteryfailure
are:
incorrect initial activation
• undercharging
• overcharging
corrodedconnections
• freezing

BatteryRemovalandInstallation
Whenremoving and installing thebattery,
disconnectand connect the cablesin this
orderto avoid sparking:
1.To removethe battery, first disconnect
thenegative (-) cable from the grounding
screw on the back of the battery bracket
post. Bendthe cableaway from any metal
parts.
2. Disconnect the negative (-) cablefrom
thenegative (-) batterypost.
3. Disconnectthe positive (+) cablefrom
thepositive (+) batterypost and bend it
awayfrom any metal parts.Cover the
cableterminal with its rubber boot.
4. Removethe battery clamp.
5.To installthe battery, reversethe above
steps. Be surethat thebattery posts face
tothe rear of the tiller and that the posi-
tive (+) post is on theleft sideasyou face
forward from the handlebars.
BatteryStorage
Chargebatteryfully. Thebattery loses
someof itscharge eachday when the unit
is not used.
IMPORTANT:NEVERstore battery
without a full charge.Rechargebattery
beforereturning toservice or every two
months, whichever occursfirst.
Whenstoring unitfor extended periods,
disconnect batterycables. Removing
batteryfrom unit is recommended.
