Incorrectcable adjustmentcould cause
thewheels and tines to rotateunexpect-
edly. Follow adjustment procedures
carefully. Failure to do so could result
inpersonalinjury or propertydamage.
4. Checkfor correct spring/cable tension
asinstructed in Section 5, Checkingand
Adjusting Forward ClutchBelt Tension.
5. Whentension is correct,tighten the
two jam nuts(B) securely.
STEP5: CHECKTRANSMISSION
GEAROIL LEVEL
Thetransmission wasfilled with gearoil
atthe factory. However,be sure to check
the oil levelat this time to makecertain it
is correct.
IMPORTANT:Donot operatethe tiller if
thegear oil level is low. Doing so will
result in severedamage to the transmis-
sioncomponents.
1. With thetiller on level ground, pullthe
DepthRegulator Lever (R, Figure 2-13)
backand then slide it to the second notch
from the top. NOTE: If the lever does not
move, lift thetine hoodflap and look fora
plastictie securingthe lever in place. Cut
and removethe tie.
2. Removethe oil level check plug (M,
Figure2-10) on the left-side of the trans-
mission. (Dueto dried painton the plug
threads,it may require some force to
removethe plug the first time.) The gear
oil levelis correct if oil starts toflow out
ofthe hole as the plug is removed. If so,
securelyreinstall the plug.

3. If oil does not flow from the check
hole,add oil as follows:
NOTE:Donot useautomatic transmission
fluid or motor oil in the transmission.
{a) Clean areaaround the fill hole(N,
Figure2-11) and unscrew gear oil fill
plug.
Figure2-11: Addinggear oil,
(b) If addingonly a few ounces of gear
oil,use API rated GL-4 or GL-5gear oil
havinga viscosity of SAE140, SAE85W-
140or SAE80W-90. If refillingan empty
transmission, useonly GL-4gear oil
havinga viscosity of SAE85W-140 or
SAE140.
(c) Usinga cleanfunnel, slowly add gear
oil until itflows from the gearoil level
checkhole (N, Figure2-11).
(d) Reinstall and tighten securely the gear
oilfill plug (M, Figure2-10).
STEP6: ATTACHWHEEL GEAR
LEVER
1. Insertthe Wheel GearLever (P, Figure
2-12) upthrough the slot in the control
panelthat is labeled"WHEEL GEAR."
2. Insert two #10-32 x 1/2" round head
screwsdown through the "+" marks on
thecontrol paneldecaland securely
attachthe wheel gear mounting bracket
usingtwo #10 Iockwashersand #10-32
nuts.
3. Usea small board to tap the Wheel
GearLeverknob securely onto the lever.
4. Securethe wheel gearcable and the
reverseclutch control cable to the left-
sidehandlebarwith two plastic ties (S,
Figure2-13) located about two feetapart.
Snipoff anyexcesstie lengthwith
scissors.
STEP7 ATTACHINGTHE BATTERY
CABLES(MODELE666M)
Thepositive battery terminal is marked
Pos.(+). The negativebatteryterminal is
markedNeg. (-).
1. Removethe hex bolt and hex nut from
thepositive cable (heavy red wire).
2. Removethe plastic cover from the
positivebattery terminal andattach the
positivecable to the positive battery ter-
minal(+) with the bolt and hex nut. Make
certainthat the rubber boot covers the

positiveterminal to help protect it from
corrosion.
3. Removethe hexbolt and hex nut from
thenegative cable (heavy blackwire).
4. Removethe black plastic cover from
thenegative battery terminal and attach
thenegative cableto the negative battery
terminal (-) with the bolt and hex nut.
IMPORTANT:
Ifthe batteryis putinto serviceafter the
dateshown on top of battery, charge the
batteryas instructed inthe Maintenence
sectionof this manual prior to operating
thetiller.
STEP8: CHECKAIR
PRESSURE IN TIRES
Usea tire pressuregaugeto checkthe air
pressurein bothtires. Deflate or inflate
bothtires equallyto between15 PSIand
20 PSI). Besure that both tires are
inflatedequally or the unit will pullto one
side.
STEP9: CHECKHARDWARE
FORTIGHTNESS
Inspectthe hardware on the unit and
tightenany loose screws,bolts and nuts.
