INTRODUCTION
This Sectiondescribes the location and
function of the controls onyour tiller.
Referto thefollowing section"Operation"
for detailed operating instructions.
Practiceusing thesecontrols, withthe
engineshut off, until youunderstand the
operationof the controls andfeel confi-
dentwith them.
IMPORTANT:Refertothe separate engine
manufacturer's EngineOwner'sManual
for information about the controls onthe
engine.
WHEEL GEAR LEVER
This lever(A, Figure 3-1) has two posi-
tions: ENGAGEandDISENGAGE.
Inthe ENGAGEposition,the wheels will
startturning when either the Forward
ClutchControl or the Reverse Clutch
Controlis engaged (the tines will also
startturning when either clutch is
engaged).

TheDISENGAGEposition placesthe
wheels in thefreewheeling modeto allow
the unitto bemoved without the engine
running. UsetheDISENGAGEposition
onlywhen the engine is not running. See
"DANGER"statementthat follows.
Toshift to ENGAGE,gently (do not force)
movethe lever forward while also rolling
thetiller afew inches forward or back-
ward. Movingthe tiller helpsto align the
shift mechanismwith the transmission
wheeldrive gears.
Toshift to DISENGAGE(freewheel),
movethe lever rearward, without rolling
thetiller. The wheelswill rollfreely
whenthe lever is properly set in the
DISENGAGEposition.
FORWARD CLUTCH CONTROL
Thetwo interconnected levers (B, Figure
3-1) control the engagementof forward
driveto the wheels and tines.
ToOperatethe ForwardClutchControl:
1. Beforeengagingthe Forward Clutch
Control,put the Wheel GearLever in the
ENGAGEposition(see "WARNING"
below).
2. Pullup and hold one or bothof the
leversagainst the handlebar grips to
engagethewheels and tines.
3. ReleaseBOTHleversto disengage
(stop) the wheels andtines. All forward
motion will stop(the enginewill continue
torun).
Never place the Wheel Gear Lever in
DISENGAGE (Freewheel) when the
engineis running.
Having the Wheel Gear Lever in
DISENGAGE and then engaging the
tines/wheels with either the Forward
Clutch Control or the Reverse Clutch
Control could allow the tinesto propel
thetiller rapidlyforwardorbackward.
Failure to follow thisinstruction could
result in personal injury or property
damage.
Neverengage the wheels and tines with
the Forward Clutch Control or the
Reverse Clutch Control unless the
WheelGear Lever is in ENGAGE.
Engagingthe Forward Clutch Controlor
the Reverse Clutch Control when the
wheelsare notengagedcould allow the
tinesto rapidlypropel the tiller forward
orbackward.
Failure to follow this warning could
result in personal injury or property
damage.
