STARTINGTHE ENGINE
Thefollowing steps describehow to start
and stop the engine. Donot attemptto
engagethe tines orwheels until you
havereadall of the operating instruc-
tionsin this Section. Alsoreview
thesafety rules in Section1: "Safety"
andthetiller andengine controls
informationinSection 3: "Features and
Controls."
1. Completethe "Pre-Start Checklist" on
theprevious page.
2. Putthe Wheel GearLever (Figure4-1)
inthe ENGAGEposition.
3. Putthe DepthRegulator Lever in the
"travel" position (leverall the way down)
sothat the tines are clearof theground.
4. Releaseallcontrols onthe tiller.
5. Put the EngineThrottle ControlLever
(Figure4-1) inthe "FAST" setting.
6.On engines equipped with afuel valve,
turn valve to open position as instructed
inthe separateenginemanual.
7.Choke or primeengine as instructedin
theseparate EngineOwner's Manual.
8. Forrecoil (non-electric) starting
models:
(a) Placeone hand on fuel tankto stabi-
lizeunit when you pull the starter
handle.
(b) Use the recoil starter ropeto start
theengine as instructed in the sepa-
rateEngineOwner's Manual. When
theengine starts, gradually move
thechoke lever (onengines so
equipped)to the "NOCHOKE",
"CHOKEOFF"or "RUN" position.
(c) Leavethe EngineThrottle Control
Leverin the "FAST" setting.
9. Forelectric starting models(E666M):
(a)Turn theengine ignition keyto the
"START"setting and allow the
startermotor to crankthe engine for
severalseconds. Avoidcranking the
enginelonger than 15 seconds at a
time as doingso could damage the
startermotor. NOTE: Referto the
EngineOwner's Manualfor detailed
startinginstructions.
(b)When theengine starts, releasethe
keyand it will return to the "RUN"
setting.
(c) Graduallymove choke lever (on
enginesso equipped) to "NO
CHOKE","CHOKEOFF"or"RUN"
position.
(d) LeavetheEngine Throttle Control
Leverin the "FAST" setting.
ToStartthe Electric StartEngineWith
theRecoil StarterRope
If necessary,the electric startengine can
bestarted with the recoil starter rope by
following the stepsbelow:
1. Ifthe battery is not "dead" or
damaged,leaveit connected to the tiller
soit will be rechargedduring engine
operation.Make sure the battery cellsare
filledto the UPPERLEVELlinewith elec-
trolyte.
2. Ifthe battery is"dead" or damaged,
removeit (refer to "Battery Removal and
Installation" in Section 5) andhave it
tested. Beforestarting engine, cover the
terminal onthe loose end of the positive
(+) cablewith the insulated boot and
secureit in place with electricaltape to
preventelectrical sparks.
3. Put the ignition key in the "RUN"
position and thenfollow Steps 1-8 of
"Starting the Engine."
STOPPING THE ENGINE
1. To stop the wheels andtines, release
theForward Clutch Control leversor the
ReverseClutch Control knob (whichever
control is engaged).
2. To stopthe engine on the recoil start
model, movethe EngineThrottle Control
Leverto the "STOP" position.
3. Tostop theengine on an electric start
model,move the ignition keyto "OFF".
IMPORTANT:Afterstopping an electric
startengine, remove the ignition key from
theswitch to reducethe possibility of
unauthorizedstarting of theengine.
OPERATINGTHETILLER
Thefollowing pagesprovide guidelines to
usingyour tiller effectively and safely in
variousgardening applications. Besure
to read"Tilling Tips & Techniques"in this
Sectionbefore you actually putthe tines
intothe soil.
This is a traditional "standard rotating
tine" tiller with forward rotating tines. It
operatescompletely differently from CRT
(Counter RotatingTines) tillers orfrom
low-cost front tine tillers.
1. Followthe "Pre-Start Checklist" on the
previous page. Be sure that the Wheel
GearLeveris in the ENGAGEposition.
2. Put the Depth Regulator Lever in the
"travel" position (leverall the waydown)
sothat thetines are clear of the ground.
Usethis positionwhen practicing with
yourtiller or when movingto orfrom the
garden. When you are ready to begin
tilling, you must movethe Depth Regula-
tor Lever to the desireddepth setting (see
"Tilling Tips & Techniques").
3. Start the engine and allow itto warm
up. When warm, put EngineThrottle
Control Lever in "FAST"speedsetting.
Keepawayfrom rotatingtines. Rotating
tineswill causeinjury.
4. For forwardmotion ofthe wheels and
tines:
(a) Pull one or both ofthe Forward
ClutchControl Levers upand hold
them againstthe handlebars. To
stop forward motion of the wheels
andtines, releasethe levers.
