Before inspecting, cleaning or servicing the machine, shutoff engine, wait for all moving parts to
come to a complete stop, disconnect spark plug wire and move wire away from spark plug. J
Removethe key from the keyswitch on units soequipped. J
Failure tofollow these instructionscan result in serious personal injury or property damage.
pull down on the beltand roll it onto the
large,forward-most groove of thetrans-
mission pulley (P, Figure5-20).
7. Reinstallthe belt cover.
8. Testfor correct tensionon the forward
clutchbelt (see Checking Forward Belt
Tension).
REVERSECLUTCH BELT REMOVAL
AND REPLACEMENT
Figure5-22: Right-sideview.
Thereverse clutch belt (J, Figure5-22) is
drivenby the engine drive pulley (I, Figure
5-20). When the ReverseClutchControl
knobis pulledout, itpulls the reverse
idlerarm andpulley (N) whichtightens
the belt against the engine drive pulley.
Thisdrives thetransmission drivepulley
(L),resulting in reversemotion.
RemovingReverseClutchBelt
1. Stopengine, allow it tocool and dis-
connectspark plug wire beforeworking
nearbelts. Also remove ignition key on
electricstart models.
2. Removebelt cover (Figure5-13) by
removingtwo flangeIocknuts.
3. Pullthe reverse clutch beltdownward
andslip it off the transmission pulley
(L,Figure 5-22).
4. Usetwo 1/2"wrenches to loosen and
removewire beltguide (R, Figure5-22)
from the reverseidler arm pulley. Do not
removeIocknut and screw.
5. Removethe reversebelt and pull it out
throughfront of transmission housing.
InstallingReverseClutchBelt
1. Stopengine, allow itto cool and dis-
connectspark plug wire beforeworking
nearbelts. Also remove ignitionkeyon
electricstart models.
IMPORTANT:Theforward clutch belt
must be installed before the reverse
clutch belt.
2. Installthe forward clutch belt (see
Installing Forward Clutch Belt in this
section)before installing reversebelt.
IMPORTANT:The reversebelt has a 'V"
shape. When installing the belt,make
surethat the widest (flat) side of the belt
ridesagainst the reverse idler pulley(N,
Figure5-22) and transmission pulley (L).
If needed, the belt can betwisted "inside
out" so that the "V" shapedside ison the
outsideand the widest side is on the
inside.
3. Insert the beltdown into thefront of
thetransmission housing. Slip the top
halfof the belt onto the reverse idler arm
pulley(N).
4. Pullthe belt downward andloop the
bottom half of beltaround thefront
grooveof transmission pulley (L, Figure
5-22).
5. Mountthe belt guide betweenthe two
flat washers and tighten snugly. The
guideneeds adjusting before fully
tightening.
Figure5-23: Reverse belt guidepositioning.
6. (Youwill needan assistant to help
with this step.) Pull the reverseidler
pulley(N) upto itshighest point and
positionthe belt guide (R) horizontally
levelas shown in Figure5-23. Securely
tighten the screw and lock nut (M, Figure
5-22).
7. Pull back on the ReverseClutch
Controlknob and make sure that the
reverseclutch belt fully contacts the
groovein the enginepulley. Releaseknob
andmake sure that thebelt doesn't
engagethe reverseengine pulley. This
maycausethe unit to move in reverse
whenthe Wheel GearLever is engaged.
Adjust the cablefor lesstension if this
condition occurs. SeeCheckingand
Adjusting Reverse Belt Tensionfor more
information.
8. Reinstallthe belt coverand secure it
with two flange Iocknuts.
9. Testthe unitin anopen location.
