OFF SEASON STORAGE
Whenthe tiller won't be used for
extendedperiods, prepare it for storage
asfollows:
1.Clean the tiller andengine.
2. Doroutine tiller lubrication and check
for loose parts and hardware.
3. Protectthe engineand perform recom-
mendedengine maintenancebyfollowing
theengine storage instructions found in
theseparate EngineOwner's Manual.
NOTE:Besure to protect the fuel lines,
carburetorand fuel tank from gum
depositsby removing fuel or by treating
fuelwith afuel stabilizer(follow engine
manufacturer's recommendations).
4. Onelectric start units,follow "Battery
Storage"instructions in this Section.
5.Store unit in a clean, dry area.
6. Neverstore the tiller with fuel in the
fueltank inan enclosed area where gas
fumescould reachan open flame or
spark,or where ignition sources are
present(space heaters,hot water heaters,
furnaces,etc.).

BOLOTINES

Thetines will wearwith useand should
beinspectedat the beginning of each
tilling seasonandafter every 30 operating
hours. Tines can bereplaced individually
oras a complete set. Never inspect or
servicethe tines unless the engineis
stopped,the spark plug wireis discon-
nected,andthe ignition key is removed
onelectric start models.
A. TineInspection:
With use, the tines will becomeshorter,
narrowerand pointed (Figure 5-5). Badly
worn tines will result in a loss of tilling
depthand reduced effectivenesswhen
choppingup and turning under organic
matter. UseFigure5-5 as aguide to
whenthe tinesshould bereplaced.

B. RemovingaSingle Tine:
1. Removethetwo screws and nutsthat
attacha single tine to the tine holder
(Figure5-6). If needed,use penetrating
oil to help free the nuts.
2. Wheninstalling a single tine, besure
to position it so that its cutting edge will
enterthe soil first asthe tiller moves
forward.
C. RemovingaTine Assembly:
1. If removing both tine assemblies, mark
them "left" and"right" before removal.
Doingso will help ensure that the assem-
bliesare reinstalled on the correct sides
ofthe tiller.
2. Removethe screw and Iocknut that
securethe tine assembly to the tine shaft
(Photo 5-7). Pull the tine assembly off
theshaft (if necessary,use a rubber
malletto tap the tine assembly outward).
3. Beforereinstalling thetine assembly,
inspectthe tine shaft for rust, rough
spots or burrs and file or sand as needed.
Applya thin coatof greaseto the shaft.
4. Installeach tine assembly so that the
cuttingedge of thetines will enter the
soil first when the tillermoves forward.
Securethe tine assemblyto the tine shaft
usingthe screw andIocknut previously
removed. Tightensecurely.
