INTRODUCTION
Readthis Section of the manualthor-
oughlybefore you start the engine. Then,
takethe time to familiarizeyourself with
thebasic operation ofthetiller before
usingit in the garden.
Findan open,level areaand practice
usingthe tiller controlswithout the tines
engagingthe soil (puttines in "travel"
setting). Onlyafteryou've becomecom-
pletelyfamiliar with the tiller shouldyou
beginusing it in thegarden.
BREAK+INOPERATION
Performthe following maintenanceafter
thefirst twohours ofnew operation (see
"Maintenance" in thismanual and the
EngineOwner'sManual).
1. Changeengineoil.
2. Checkfor looseor missing hardware
onunit. Tightenor replaceasneeded.
3. Checktransmission gear oil level.
4. Checktension onforward clutch belt.

STARTINGANDSTOPPING

THEENGINE

To help preventseriouspersonal injury
ordamageto equipment:
Before starting engine, put Wheel
GearLever in ENGAGEposition.
Before starting engine, put Forward
Clutch Control levers and Reverse
ClutchControl in neutral (disengaged)
positionsbyreleasing controls.
Never run engine indoors or in
enclosed, poorly ventilated areas.
Engine exhaust contains carbon
monoxide, an odorless and deadly
gas.
Avoid engine muffler and nearby
areas. Temperatures inthese areas
may exceed150OF.
PRE-START CHECKLIST:
Makethe following checks and perform
thefollowing servicesbefore starting the
engine.
1. ReadSections1 and 3 in this Manual.
Readthe separateEngineOwner's
Manual.
2. Checkunit for loose or missing hard-
ware. Serviceas required.
3. Checkengineoil level. See Engine
Owner'sManual.
4. Checkthat all safety guards and
coversare in place.
5. Checkair cleaner and enginecooling
system. SeeEngineOwner'sManual.
6. Attachspark plug wire tospark plug.
GASOLINEISHIGHLY FLAMMABLEAND
ITSVAPORSAREEXPLOSIVE.
Follow gasoline safety rules in this
manual(see Section 1) and in the sepa-
rateEngineOwner's Manual.

7. Fillthe fuel tank with gasoline accord-

EngineOwner's Manual. Follow all
instructions and safety rules carefully.
